Below is the Exam hint that was given to you at the beginning of the unit:
"The Unit 4 Exam will include a question that asks you to define and schedule a project to build a web site for a small college. Your resources will be yourself (Project Manager), a graphic artist and Photoshop expert, an HTML/CSS expert, and a PHP/MYSQL expert.
You will be asked to list the tasks you think are required to build the site and indicate which of your resources you will assign to each task. Then you will be asked to schedule the project.
The small college has 1500 liberal arts undergraduate students in a single school (no business school, no school of education, no graduate students)."
Here is a list of resources available to you and their hourly cost:
1. Project Manager: $100,
2. Photographer/Artist/Graphic Layout Expert $50
3. HTML/CSS Expert $60
4. PHP/MySQL Expert $80
5. Business Analyst (can interview users, plan and conduct tests) $85
Your tasks on this exam are to:
1. Save this document to your local hard disk. Update the saved copy by filling in the scope paragraph below (3 points)
2. Define your project in Microsoft Project by listing the tasks. List between 50 and 100 tasks. The project starts today and ends when you determine it ends. (3 points) Hint: You are allowed (but not required) to use the list of tasks from Assignment 8 as a starting point.
3. Enter duration information (1 point)
4. Enter Predecessor information (1 point)
5. Define the resources (1 point)
6. Assign resources to tasks (1 point)
7. Determine the total cost of your project and enter it into the document below (1 point )
8. Answer the "How could I make the project shorter" question in the document below (2 points)
8a. Answer the "How can the plan be improved" question.
9. Save this updated document and attach it to Question 1 in the exam in Blackboard. Include your name within the file name (1 point)
10. Save your Microsoft Project file and attach it to Question 2 in Blackboard. Include your name within the file name (1 point)
Scope: Specify what you will include on your web site. Also specify your target audience (current students? prosepective students? professors and staff?) Confine your scope to information about the college. Specically, do not include a learning management system (like Blackboard), a registration system, or any finance or accounting systems. Your scope cannot be trivial (just include the name and address of the college and a picture) because then you will not be able to list 50 tasks. Your scope cannot be too broad or you will have to work too hard and you will not be able to confine your project to 100 tasks. State any assumptions that you made such as "the college already has a domain name so I don't have to obtain one as part of this project" or "I decided to use a web host instead of the college's computer" or "The college's computers have enough capacity to accomodate my web site".....s
Cost: Use Project to calculate the cost of each resource. Lists the costs by resource and the total project cost below
Answer this question: Management thinks that it will take you too long to build this web site and asks you if you can do the project in a shorter period of time. What steps could you take to cause your project to end eariler? Do you think the steps you identified would add risk to the project?
Answer this question: Analyze your own plan. How could it be improved? (more details somewhere? add more resources? add more testing before going live? take something out of the scope? add something to the scope? outsource the entire job)
