e-commerce Comments
This page contains paraphrased (shortened) comments from students taking GSB 622 99 (MIS online) in the Fall of 2011. They watched the videos that were available as of October 1 and gave thought to what e-commerce content they would like to see in this course. Selected comments are listed below.
Selected Comments (in no particular order)
- Avoid making the students pay for software or use something cheap. Also, don't force online students to come into a computer lab.
- Based on one comment, I need to communicate that Dreamweaver is software (like Excel) and not a web site.
- It is not clear how the domain is connected to the host and why these are needed.
- A number of students felt that the e-commerce problem should not exceed 20% of the grade. There was one "vote" for 35% and two for 25%, one for keep it optional.
- The e-commerce problem should be 0% because the course should be more business oriented (details take away from the rest of the course).
- Video 2 loops after 4 minutes. Check sound levels on all videos. Check to see if (where) edges of the screen were cut-off.
- If Dreamweaver is used, students need more details about it.
- Group Projects were mentioned: (2 for, 2 against, question doing groups in an online class, one vote for 2 people per group, ).
- Don't use two different sites as examples in the videos. Use only one.
- Use Wordpress as the site building tool.
- Itegrate with a database (Msaccess).
- Have an outline/word document that goes with the videos.
- Should e-commerce be incorporated into Marketing, Financial Management and Information Policy as well?
- Microsoft Publisher can create web pages.
- Inclue an entire e-commerce class in one of the concentrations.
- Include a real-world project plan for a real web site wilth timelines and tasks.
- The project is too hands on.
- Keep Access and Excel
- Get rid of Access and Excel
- Use Professor Condon's approach of (for example) letting Access and Excel OR e-commerce be 50% of the grade (student chooses one or the other).
- Provide more reading references.
- Make Dreamweave available on the ACATS server and from home.
- Borrowed directly from a student:

I have tried various web development programs, and didn't mind: Website Tonight Economy through GoDaddy, and Wix was a nice program too. Both are very user-friendly programs, and I was able to finish a website in a few hours. If I knew that I would not be able to use DW after the course because I would never be able to afford it, I would probably not pay as close attention, and only learn what I need to pass the project. In our courses, we want to gain knowledge, skill sets, etc that we can use outside of college. As an optional reading, I would also recommend segments of the book "Six Figure Second Income" by Lindahl & Rozek - the title of the book is catchy enough for students to find interest in reading it (who doesn't want additional money), but it really tells you the do's and don't's so people don't waste money on certain aspects of website development (what domains to use or not use, what to use to host websites, programs, etc).
